After
six years of existence, Ericsson Stadium
is one of the top stadiums in the NFL. In
1990, the NFL announced that it would expand
to thirty teams. Charlotte was one of the
first cities mentioned as a possible site
of a new NFL team. Fans in the area had
always dreamed of having a local NFL team.
In 1993, that dream became a reality when
the NFL announced that Charlotte would receive
a franchise, to begin playing in 1995. The
team was named the Carolina Panthers. Construction
began immediately on the new stadium. Ericsson
Inc. bought the naming rights, thus getting
its name Ericsson Stadium. It became one
of only a few stadium to be financed privately
by club owners. Ericsson Stadium was not
complete in time for the 1995 season. The
Panthers had to play their inaugural season
at Memorial Stadium, home of the Clemson
Tigers (NCAA).
