In
its 30-plus years of service, 3Com Park
has been home to Willie Mays and Barry Bonds,
but it remains best known for its weather
conditions. It's been shaken by an earthquake
and rattled by winds.
Some
fans riff on Mark Twain's line and claim
that the coldest winter they've ever spent
was a summer evening at 3Com Park.
To
get around the elements the Giants play
more day games than any baseball team in
baseball other than the Chicago Cubs: 57
in 1994, up from 53 in '93 and 44 in '92.
The
stadium's incomparable aura is as much a
definitive part of the San Francisco 49ers'
tradition as their great stars. The place
has presence. Start with the breathtaking
view of San Francisco Bay. Add the aroma
of tailgate parties. Witness hot-dog wrappers
swirling in the unpredictable wind. Bundle
up for typically brisk and often damp conditions,
and brace for a sea of 49ers-red clothing
in the stands.
These are some of the things that make 3Com
Park one of the NFL's most flavorful venues.
Like the Golden Gate Bridge, 3Com Park is
a true San Francisco icon. Unless you're
tailgating, save your appetite for the stadium's
fare, and bring a jacket, even if it's 70
degrees and sunny when you head for the
game. All in all it's a unique experience--
and the football is pretty good, too. Getting
a ticket can be difficult, but if you haven't
been to a 49ers game at 3Com Park, the experience
could be worth the price you have to pay.
